S\u00e3o utilizadas principalmente em conjunto com v\u00e1lvulas globo e v\u00e1lvulas angulares em sistemas de tubagem onde a dire\u00e7\u00e3o do fluxo muda frequentemente. As v\u00e1lvulas de reten\u00e7\u00e3o de pist\u00e3o t\u00eam um tra\u00e7o constitu\u00eddo por um pist\u00e3o e um cilindro, que exerce um efeito de amortecimento durante o funcionamento. Estas v\u00e1lvulas permitem o fluxo num sentido e impedem a invers\u00e3o do fluxo devido a contrapress\u00e3o. Proporcionam uma melhor queda de press\u00e3o nas tubagens.
